Ki ho'alu, which translates as “loosening or loosening the key”, refers to the tuning of the keys on the instrument's head. Starting in 1980 and lasting more than a decade, Kahumoku, together with Hawaiian master guitarists Dennis Kamakahi and Cyril Pahinui, held an annual teaching residency at a Sheraton hotel in Knoxville, Tennessee.
